Do You Find Weight Loss a Struggle?

I have personally 70 pounds in weight, this isn't as much as you read about some people doing nowadays but is still an achievement. I am now a personal trainer, which allows me to help other people try and feel better about themselves, which is great as I can share my own experiences and bring the whole journey to life.

The main challenge as I see it is what has been called "the courage to begin" this is the start of the process. I can't express how many times during my teens and early twenties I tried to diet or exercise and it failed miserably. Why is so difficult to start things off for some people, I will discuss what I believe those reasons to be and see if you can relate to them

- Motivation, people often say they struggle to get motivated. This could be done to reason for wanting to do something in a lot of respects. For example, when I lost weight, one of my main reasons was revenge! This is can be very powerful if used in the right way but I wouldn't recommend it as a wholesale approach. Once you find your reason for losing weight and it is really strong, then always focus on that when times get tough and you should pull through. This is a huge area to cover but if you think about your reasons first, this can help make things easier.

- Support, this is very tricky indeed. I can't express how many times I have spoken to people who have struggled to get the necessary social support. It is very difficult in family settings to get everyone on board. One of the issues in my my opinion is the constant bombardment of unhealthy messages to kids through adverts and peer pressure. The other problem is the fact that children often see sweet things as a reward for good behavior (which translates through later life as well) If your are a parent or have a partner, it may be a good idea to chat things through and explain your reasons first. If you can get that strong support network then it really helps.

Fear- This is a massive area, so I will only cover one aspect of it. There are going to times when you are afraid, one of the main ones is being afraid of what people think. This will never go away, you can conquer it but in my experience it will always be there. How do you conquer it? Two ways in my opinion, number one, focus on your goal like your life depended on it! number two, remember logic, unless someone makes a comment, how do you know what they are thinking? The answer, you don't! I don't mean to over simplify this subject but give these methods a go and see how you get on.

Those are three of the main issues I faced along the way. Everyone will have different one's but the message I would give is normally the same, never, ever, give up. Another good way is to get help, there are numerous ways to do this, personal training is not as expensive as it used to be, weight loss clubs and fit classes are all ways to be around like minded people which really helps.

The most thing to remember is that it does get easier, the start of any challenging journey is always the most difficult time.

Make sure you hang in there!
